2004 Ranger Edge Supercab. Only have 50K on it but my last Ranger (1991 Super Cab) did great in 14 years of commuting from Mustang to Tinker without any problems. I like the Tacomas better but bang for the buck is there with the Ranger. I think the Toyota may be overpriced but I shied away and didn't try to bargain when I went looking.

I have a 98 extended cab Frontier with 185k on it that we use around the park. Other than replacing the battery and alternator have had no problems. The paint is faded and headliner has fallen out. Uglier than a dogs butt, but just keeps running.

Last Toyota truck I owned was a 05 Tacoma PreRunner 4.0.

The good.
Powerful and smooth V6. Amazing engine. Transmission no issues. Ride was very good and was quiet. Body integrity was good except the door arm rest.

The bad.
14-20 mpg. No payload capacity (this is where the good ride comes from). At 80,000 miles I had the front wheel bearings replaced. Security system (buried deep into the da$h) for the key went out. A/C quit requiring a new compressor. Started having electrical gremlins with the factory tow package. Very expen$ive to fix.

Before I owned the 2005, I owned a couple of Toyota trucks (purchased the first one new in 1977) and had great service from them. Also owned a couple of Nissans that I purchased new and they gave me great service.

going to have to go with the ranger, the main reason i say this is that the last changes ford made to the ranger was '02 (i think) since then it tooled on forgotten by ford. I have no experience with the years you have listed, or the other makes listed.

I have a '98 Ranger with 166,000 miles, 4.0L V6 auto, bought it new, since the middle of June this year it has been averaging 19.7 mpg combined, and since new combined is 20.345 (note I drive very few highway miles now, I used to have an 80 mile roundtrip commute). When I was driving 80 mile commute I was getting up to 23.5 MPG (season of the year does affect mileage) but only as low as 21.5 MPG.

reliability has been fantastic. Over the 14 years I have owned this vehicle following is maintenance (outside normal routine maintenace) that has been required;
replace heater valve, thermostat, O2 Sensor, plugs and wires, pcv, serpentinve belt, lower ball joints, sway bar end link, cam shaft synchronizer, fuel pump,
cruise control recall, IAC (idle adustment something),
hood release cable (twice),
brake job & wheel bearings (three times),
battery (three times),
tires (4th times) .

p.s. I had an '88 Ranger 4.0L V6 auto that I put 155,000 on before selling in '96. I think it would have easily gone another 150,000 miles.

Man. That doesn't seem reliable to me at ALL! Is that after 166k miles or did I misread?

you read that right, 14 years and 166,000 miles, it has failed to start and drive 3 times during that period of time (dead battery), all other times my truck was still getting me where I wanted to go. Maybe my definition of reliable and yours is different?

What do you drive that you have had for 14 years and driven over 150,000, and can you pull receipts and tell me everything that has been done to it?

This is not a personal attack, just that sometimes people forget what they do over time.

I have to go with Montesa on this one. That much repair work in just 166K miles seems a trifle much.

NOTICE: No one has mentioned the Honda Ridgeline. Also known as a Civic with a pickup bed. oogly.

I have driven Tacomas and Rangers/B3000 for all but the last 2 years. Would recommend Tacomas long before the Rangers.
The Fords aren't bad, but they aren't as trouble-free as the Toyotas.

Somewhere in Mexico, my last three trucks are still puttering around: an '86 with 350K+ miles, a '95 with 200K+ miles, and a '02 with 125K+ miles.
