Reminds me of the conversation I had with a SSA manager years ago. I met him at a state job service office when I was looking for a job after I retired from the USAF. I did the application/resume/interview with the job service lady and was just getting ready to leave when she called me back and said you two guys need to talk. The guy that came in was the SSA manager. After talking to him for awhile he offered me a job with the SSA. I told thank you but no thanks. It would have been a 140 mile round trip drive everyday. But anyway the whole jist of conversation was the huge amount of scamming that was being done by dirtbags going into the military for the express purpose to scam the military and SS. He said once they got through basic training they would start complaining about headaches, backaches etc. then eventually get medically retired. He said the numbers were staggering.

What gets me is that SS was supposed to be a security net for those people with no other retirement money. IE the poor and those in crap jobs. Somehow it got expanded into a benefit for everybody if they needed it or not. It chaps my azz to see people like congress critters drawing SS when they get far more in government retirement benefits.

Also illegals are getting it too from what I have been reading. Then we have the agreement Bush made with Mexico where they can come here, work for 5 years then retire to Mexico with full benefits.

This right here! Been going on for decades, Congress has been using SS as there own personal slush fund to win votes and stuff money in their pockets from the lobbyist.

That is not what it does. WEP and GPO reduced SS benefits for people who paid into SS and a Pension plan. They have not been receiving the benefits they paid for. All this does is allow them to get what they paid for - the same as anyone else on SS.
It actually depends on when you entered civil service and what pension program you were under . If you were under the old FERS assuming you were a federal employee then you didn't pay in at all however since 1983 most civil servants have had to pay into social security. Railroad employees are still exempt from Social Security

IIRC Congress paid for the Vietnam War by borrowing from SS and didn’t pay it back. Up to that point SS was funded and operated on its own merit. Congress and special interests in their pockets ruin everything they touch.

If you were under the old FERS assuming you were a federal employee.....

I know what you mean but just to nitpick - regarding Federal service, there is no 'old FERS'. FERS is the new system and CSRS was the 'old' system.

SS was not paid into by an employee under CSRS so there wasn't any SS benefits to be had for employees under CSRS. Lots of those folks worked other jobs or after retirement to be eligible for SS in that way. The current WEP or the GPO pretty much nullifies those benefits.

I think looking up what the GPO and WEP actually does (for the uninformed) would go along way in this discussion.
