A few years back, my choice was a toss up between a Browning BL-22 lever action, Winchester M-62 pump or Marlin 1894 lever .22Mag.

Old eyes has made my preference switch to a .410 SxS. Though, I still prefer a rifle, when the leaves are gone.

Baikhal, English stock, straight grip, 3", F/F , single trigger

My phone and my photographer eye are not professional quality, but here it is.

Thanks for the pictures! I love the straight grip, they feel good. Love the look of that little gun, looks like fun.

I used to squirrel hunt in S.E. Oklahoma with m,y now deceased, best friend. We still hunted and never used a dog. The early dawn and the hours as the sun set were most productive. I carried a Remington 552BDL with a Redfield 4x Scope and loaded with CCI .22cal. Short Hollow Point Ammunition. It was reasonably quiet and perfect for the prey we were seeking. My wife is an Oklahoma Country Girl and, in my expert opinion, makes the best fried squirrels ever served to a husband. My family are New Yorkers and they believe that we are insane for eating them….. Dahhh……

My dad worked with a guy from up north. Dad mentioned something about squirrels and gravy and the guy says “you eat……rodents?”.
Dad told that story for decades.

What is y’all’s go to choice for squirrel hunting? Is it shotguns or is it rimfire? I have always heard CZs, 10/22s, model 60s, and some bolt action savages were great for squirrels. But I am really leaning towards getting a Henry lever action 22lr. Do any of you have any experience using one?
I have also heard a little about 17 mach ii. I’m interested in that round but the rifle selection seems to be low and the ammo availability seems to be difficult to find as well. Thanks
Spent a lot of my childhood hunting them with a Hopkins and Allen rolling block .22 and shorts. Favorite rifle was a Browning SA 22 that I may never see again, I like the shorts or longs because they're quieter and you can sometimes get a couple squirrels on a stand. A shotgun is nice when you have a lot of seasons open at once, i.e.put a plug in it and jump ducks, shoot squirrels, kick up rabbits. Whatever shotgun you have works great as long as you have at least improved cylinder choke. I probably get most of my squirrels inside 25yds either way just because of how I hunt.
