Like Ready_fire_aim, I would suggest the old #4. They are big enough that you need to do some damage to take one out.
The law in Oklahoma generally has exceptions for killing otherwise protected animals if you’re defending livestock.
Grandpa's auto 5 12 gauge would hold a tight pattern way out there and only a 28" barrel.
I let a quail get 40 yards out and turned it to dust.
Could be the wads or load in those #5 purple/blue hulls.
Could be the thousands of rounds shot through it and the paper thin muzzle allowed super tight patterns.
I think there is some science to the chamber taper that allows tighter patterns.
Can you shoot those black head buzzards with a rifle?

I know retrieverman has done a lot pf experimenting lately with reloading 12 gauge turkey loads, and if I’m thinking right was it mastercarper did a bunch as well.
Past the point of this in the conversation but Marlin also made a 40" for the 120/Glenfield 788 12.
As has been stated, black vulture are federally protected, BUT you can get a depredation permit which I would recommend since it’s already been broadcast on the internet that you intend to kill them.
Personally, I think you’re going to have a hard time killing them by pass shooting with a shotgun, but I’VE HEARD if they land on the ground or in a tree an Alexander Arms 17hmr AR topped with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 scope will drop them like a hot rock.
Keep in mind though that I’ve only heard this.

In MY experience, any shot near them especially when on the roost will drive them away and they won't return.
Yes they're protected but wildlife department will give cattle producers a depradation permit to take 10
Also even if you have the permits make sure your shooting black vultures and not young turkey vultures. Their heads are black also till they get older
