I have a set of 8" KC lights on my truck but I'm looking for more of a flood light pattern rather than spots. I use these on back roads during deer season (no not for poaching)frequently since my vision at night sucks. I've seen some pretty cool LED stuff but it's big bucks. Im thinking a HID set up would help but I dont want to waste my money without gathering some opinions before hand. That way I can blame you guys if I dont like them. What's an H3 bulb? Anyone have a budget wise option?

H3 is a certain bulb pattern that fits in certain types of lamps. I'm not sure if you're looking for that. From what I can remember it's a fairly small bulb. I did a retrofit at one point in a fog lamp housing that used to take h3's with an HID bulb that came out ok.

As far as HID they put out a ton of light, it would be a practical option, but the light housing that they would be going into would be the factor in getting you the type of light you want. But keep in mind that you will need to take into account where the filament sits in standard pattern bulbs and you may have to push back the hid bulb to match that.

I have some of the 6 or 7" slim line pro comps. They're just normal bulbs, but they impressed me. They completely drown out my high beams I can't even see the edge of the light pattern of my high beams with them on.

H3 bulbs are small, the driving lights on my truck are H3 bulbs.

They don't exactly turn night into day, which sounds like what you're after, but that might also depend on the housing rather than the bulb.

When in Alaska, I saw these bumper mounted lights that were at least 12" wide. Someone up there said they were mostly a local thing. Anyone know the brand? Personally, Ive only ever had KC Dayliters.

Dude, those are LightForce lights. Even the Alaska State Troopers use them on the front of their vehicles. I'm putting a set on my truck next week. 730,000 candle power throws some serious light.

So do I need the HID or H3 to illuminate "everything"?

HID/Xenon plus large lenses FTW, as said earlier H3 bulbs are designed for smaller apps like driving lights and such. H3 bulbs are small so their light output can be small. I have always liked products from PIAA or HELLA, I would just get the biggest lamps/lenses you can afford and look for flood type lenses too.

KC lights have different styles for different purposes. Long Range. Driving, Fog, and Flood. Here is a link for flood lights. flood Put 2 flood, and 2 long range and adjust them a little and you should have close to 140 degrees of light and in the center should reach out a long ways. long range You can get 2 of each for a little over a 100 bucks a piece. Or you can get some of the HID for a little over 100 bucks for 1 light. 4wd hardware store

edited to add. I reread and see you have spots already, add a pair of the floods and you will be happy.
