Does anyone else besides me hold the 17HM2 in high regard?

If you hunt small game and don't know about 17HM2 you're missing out on a great round.

agreed. A lot of people started shooting the 17hmr when 22wm got hard to find and realized that it does as good a job (or dare I say better) than the 22wmr on small game. I can see the HM2 doing the same thing. it's a great little round.

Would love to have at least two. they're great on rabbits and snakes too.

What does the 17 caliber rimfires have over a .22 lr for squirrels and such?

Nothing. They both kill them.
What does one caliber have over another? Just something different.

The advantage is, that it's a very flat shooting caliber versus a 22LR, somewhat like a 17HMR in trajectory. But, it isn't as hard on small critters as the 17HMR is, which tends to blow huge holes in squirrels and other similar sized game. Pretty much, if I can see it I can hit it.

This is mine with its first kill last fall. It's a CZ452 in 17HM2 with a Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 SF scope.
