This is from a Reuters article I just read on Twitter:

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma appeared more optimistic on Thursday about the possibility of reaching an agreement with Democrats on background checks.

"I think we'll ultimately get there even though the outside groups aren't comfortable with it yet," Coburn said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

I just heard that Sen. Coburn in not coming back to Oklahoma after he is through in Congress. That may explain his actions. I was talking with a freind who works in DC. He says its common knowledge there.

I don't believe that at all. It flies against everything we've seen from him.

He left his medical practice to run for Representative. But he didn't buy a house in D.C. or move his family there because he always planned to go back to being a doctor. Actually he continued to sometimes deliver a baby even while he was a Representative. He believes in the whole "citizen legislator" thing. Not being a professional politician. So he only agreed to be our Rep for three terms. After six years, he didn't run for reelection. He could have been reelected until he died of old age.

He came back to OK and went back to being a doctor. Time went by. A Senate seat came open. The state GOP didn't want him because they couldn't control him. He ran anyway but said right up front that he would only serve two terms if elected. He won, he's been reelected once and has no plans to run again. He fought the Senate when they tried to make him stop practicing medicine while a Senator. His office is still open, he has every intention of going back there. And even as a Senator, he never bought a house in D.C. He never moved his family there. He practically lives like a monk while in D.C.

So after all that, I'm supposed to believe he wants to live in D.C? Why didn't he move there a long time ago? Why didn't he buy a house? Why did he go on practicing medicine? Why didn't he shut down his practice?

I agree that he is his own man and votes his personal conscience. Which is another problem with accusing him of "selling out." Selling out implies money or at least a promise of something in the future. He doesn't want anything from anybody. He wants to go back to being a doctor. We don't really have any leverage on him since he won't be running again but that's hardly "selling out." I think he's had a belly full of politics and will be glad to be done with it. He really, really likes being a doctor.

Time will tell. Unfortunately the power and money corrupts most if not all. The net worth of many politicians somehow mysteriously grows a lot during and after their time in office.
