Could be the driver didn't have the presence of mind to shift into neutral, so the car slowed down to a stop in a hurry. I've never had this happen to me, but wouldn't a dead engine, even with an automatic tranny, cause a vehicle to stop quickly? I'd think hydraulic lock in the heads would keep the crankshaft from turning over enough for the driver to coast to the shoulder.
The torque converter (I think) will give you a lot more rolling distance than you think.

The vehicle will continue to coast until it loses momentum. Your idea about hydraulic lock seems logical, but it just doesn't work that way.

If it's in Neutral it will coast for a ways, until physics wins.

For a vehicle to stop that fast something in the trans, differ trial, or breaks would have to lock up. If torque converter will allow the trans to spin and shift to neutral much like shifting a manual trans to neutral by die gauging the clutch.

Glad you are okay Bryan. Maybe your company can think about installing dash cams on the trucks for times like these. Wouldn't be perfect but you'd at least have and idea of who went by and when. That way the cops could have a place to start with on a hit and run investigation.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read his post. They have ones that mount to the mirror that are cheap. Hundred bucks. It would have paid for itself in this instance.

I've never understood why people will stop in the middle lane like that. Even if everything dies at 65, you should be able to coast for half a mile at least, and move over in that space.

Her car died while stopped in traffic, backed up for the traffic light at the intersection of NW10th and Portland. She couldn't have done anything different.
