Sounds like Yota geared it a tad to high i fit constantly shifts up and down even in windy conditions. Might check around see what aftermarket rear gears you could put in it, lower the gears it would help just don't go to far or the rpm's on the highway will be high. My 94 chevy think has 3.73 running 70 it turns about 2500 rpms gets decent mileage.

Quite a bit of info about this on some the Tacoma forums. I had one from Dec to March of last year. Got tired of this, 0-60 in about an hour, and poor gas mileage.

Maybe because I got the tow package with a class IV receiver hitch, but my gears are 4:30. Unless I manually shift it, it stays in high gear and never down shifts even when driving into gale winds.
What engine were you running Pstmster? My 381 hp 5.7 liter 4 WD certainly hits 60 mph pretty danged quick.

I had the smaller 6 cylinder TRD 4WD. It wouldn’t get out of its own way and I was lucky to get 20 mpg. Constantly shifting unless I drove it in manual mode. The only vehicle I’ve ever had that got worse mileage on the the highway than city. Wanted but didn’t really “need it”. Traded it for a new Honda CR-V Touring with 2.3 Liter Turbo. It does 0-60 in 7 seconds and gets 32 city/35 highway. Not as cool looking as the truck but best vehicle I’ve ever owned. The good news is Tacoma’s do retain their value well and it was on a $700 learning experience.

I have a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser. It has the 4.0 V6 with a 5 speed automatic. I took it in to get it serviced and was looking at a newer Tacoma. They dropped the engine size to 3.5 and added a sixth gear to the transmission. It was a dual cab truck with very little room in the backseat. Not unlike my FJ, but the FJ is noticeably bigger. The bed was very short. It had all the bells and whistles, but I felt it was WAY overpriced.

I know someone who bought one of the newer Tacomas and he only kept it a year. He said it was sluggish and was constantly changing gears while going up and down the hills from Okc to Tulsa and back. It was a good looking truck, but he said with the changes to the engine and transmission they ruined it.

I can’t speak for the Tacoma but I have no complaints with mine so far. It has the same drivetrain as Hoddy’s.

If you want good gas mileage buy a Prius.
If you want something everyone else has, get a Tundra or a 4 Runner or a Jeep.
