had an answer but - not sure - l think you could get it done on the buyers end - they do transfers on shipped firearms with just a copy of the sellers ID - the sellers end would require shipping the firearm to an ffl ... l know if you are traveling and want to buy one you have to have it shipped to your local ffl

If I go to his state can I bring the gun I get home or does it have to be shipped?

in any event we would have an ffl to the transfers

You REALLY need to read the ATF Pamphlet at this link:
https://www.atf.gov/file/58681/download

The rules apply regardless of the type of firearm or type of private transaction (trade ,sale, etc) . The type of gun matters only if buying from an FFL in a neighboring state, NOT PRIVATE TRANSACTIONS. Some of the advice being given is a violation of fed law.

Explain how it would be a violation of the law for both parties to arrive at an FFL in either state, transfer the guns to the FFL, then have the FFL background check them, and then transfer to each party, provided they are long guns?

Maybe he is thinking about this part of the linked ATF publication:

An unlicensed individual may complete a transfer to an out-of-State person through the
following procedure:
• The unlicensed individual transfers the firearm to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) located in the State of the person receiving the firearm.
•The FFL will transfer the firearm to the unlicensed out-of-State person.
•The FFL will be responsible for lawfully transferring the firearm

I added the bolding and the previous paragraph clearly states that the regulation applies regardless of the type of transfer. I think this is written very clearly.
