Unlike Sen. Coburn, SAF/CCRKBA seems to have ACTUALLY sold out

SAF/Alan Gottlieb/CCRKBA SUPPORTS the Toomey/Manchin/Schumer bill???

I don't have words for this. SAF has been instrumental in the recent litigation to the SCOTUS. Seems when they try their hand at lobbying, it goes horribly wrong.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...ae8ae8-a51e-11e2-8302-3c7e0ea97057_story.html

In anticipation of Senate votes this week on a proposed expansion of criminal background checks for firearms sales, one gun rights organization broke with the powerful National Rifle Association on Sunday to urge support for a compromise drafted by Sens. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.).

The endorsement by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms — which calls itself the second-largest gun rights organization in the country, behind the NRA, claiming 650,000 members and supporters — is one of several moves over the past few days that have provided a boost to the hopes of proponents of background checks.

WITAF are they DOING???

I got this from the GOA. They, like some of us on OSA, are strongly opposed to this addition to the already-in-existence, communistic, rights-infringing, laws of this grand old country. This is the suggested text to send to our Dear Senator Coburn,

On Thursday, you voted, in the words of Democratic analyst Julian Epstein, to "break the back of the gun lobby."

You did that, even as the author of the most important component, Pat Toomey, conceded the bill would have done nothing about Newtown.

Rather, we know what the game is: In the words of Democratic Congressman Gerrald Nadler of New York, the purpose of this exercise (and this bill) is to "exploit" a horrific tragedy for political gain.

And you voted to do just that.

The next key vote will probably be Tuesday or Wednesday, when the Senate votes on the Schumer-Toomey universal gun registry amendment.

This Toomey-Manchin-Schumer sell-out would establish a universal gun registry for any gun transaction that ever involved any internet posting - a substantial majority of private gun sales nationwide. The language purporting to prevent gun registries is worthless, as it doesn't prohibit the ATF from doing what it's currently doing and copying 4473 information onto laptops.

In addition, it would, in section 117, explicitly waive federal privacy laws in order to allow private doctors to send the names of persons with PTSD, ADHD, and postpartum depression to the FBI - thereby unilaterally banning them from owning guns.

The vote to move forward to the Schumer-Toomey sell-out on Tuesday or Wednesday will probably be the most important vote for the rest of the bill.

If you vote wrong again on Tuesday, your throwaway votes against the Feinstein gun ban and final passage of the bill (where only 50 votes are needed) won't matter. They will just be a fraudulent effort to pretend to be pro-gun.

So please vote against the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer sell-out.

Ok, I didn't want to start another Toomey bill thread...I am talking about SAF/CCRKBA/Gottlieb. This hurts. NRA and GOA both oppose the bill, but SAF/CCRKBA are supporting it. It's a reverse from the Heller case, where NRA was playing games, while SAF was charging ahead.

I never cared for them and their uninvited spam emails either. It seemed to me they were more interested in building their email list and supporter list to try to inflate their supposed political clout more than actually getting anything done to restore our rights. Just a suspicion I had when I first started getting their emails. They sent out some of the most ridiculous rumors and fear mongering crap... I had to ask several times to get off fheir list before I was finally removed. When they claim 650,000 "members and supporters," I wonder if they include everybody on their spam email list. Something tells me they do.

In his own words...

“Just so you all know, I am in support on the Manchin-Tooney substitute bill to knock out the bad Schumer Background Check bill,” Gottlieb wrote. “I and our CCRKBA attorney lobbyist had a hand in influencing and writing parts of it.

“The bill bans any federal gun registry and carries a 15 year prison term for anyone who violates it.” He explained. “We protect and expand a good number of pro-gun rights measures as well.

“We also have an agreement that an additional amendment supported by Manchin and Toomey will be offered to even make it better by making it possible to get federal firearms rights restored, negating the current Schumer legislation that blocks it,” Gottlieb continued. “If you read the bill you can see all the advances for our cause that it contains like interstate sales of handguns, veteran gun rights restoration, travel with firearms protection, civil and criminal immunity lawsuit protection if you sell a gun plus more. It also exempts the sale or transfer of firearms between family members and friends as well as sales outside a commercial venue from a background check. If you have any kind of current state permit to own, use or carry no check is done, just the Form 4473 to stay with a dealer.

“These advances for gun rights cannot be made unless we win the Senate vote on Tuesday to substitute it for the current Schumer draconian background check that is in the bill at this time,” Gottlieb concluded. “The gun grabbers have stepped into our trap. It will be fun to see Obama forced to sign it!”

As I keep saying, I want to see the ACTUAL bill, not what people think it says or want it to say. I don't trust ANY of them anymore and nothing short of a full reading will tell me what's actually in it. This "new" method of voting on bills that haven't even been read is reprehensible. :(

From what I'm seeing here and in other sources, it looks like SAF has managed to get some pro-gun points added (I've seen national CCW reciprocity mentioned elsewhere), and apparently thinks that if passage of the anti-gun bits is inevitable, the trade-off is more than fair in the balance. I'm not saying I agree--that's how we got the NFA registry closed with FOPA '86--but it's not a complete sellout position so much as a pragmatic "at least get something in exchange for our losses" position.

My concern with that strategy is that it makes it more likely that House members who would join us in opposing the bill may now find it more acceptable on the grounds that it gives us something in exchange for our losses.

Very much agreed!

Sorry mons meg. IMHO Coburn sold us out. There's no logical reason for his "aye" vote other than a sell-out for the purpose of advancing his career after he leaves office. :(
