I'm wanting to make a kydex holster for my solo cdp similar to my crossbreed I have for my ultra carry II. I can do all the leatherworking but know nothing about the kydex part. Any suggestions?
It is not hard to use, I put mine in the overn for a couple of minutes at 250° to get it very pliable and then mold it from there. Here is what I use at home:
Thick foam (got mine from the place over by H&H for $10)
gloves
heat gun
jigsaw
dremel with cutoff wheel, cutting bit, sanding drums
grease pencil
pretty much it, I rough cut the shape out, then heat it up in the over and press in between 2 pieces of foam to get it formed. Then start working it down to the final shape. Then I use the heat gun to work on smaller areas in refining the shape.
I will post a pic of the holster I made for my S&W Shield 40 later, needs to be refined some more but works great so far.
Harbor Freight heat gun- $9.xx when on sale or with the 20% coupon in the NRA mags.
Google searching, in addition to searches here and on knife forums, will shed much light on the common ways and tips to mold Kydex to firearms. DIY foam lined "Presses" help to make the process quick and smooth looking if making multiple holsters, but a table, plywood scraps and a piece of 2" upolstery foam will get you started. I use my 4-1/2" angle grinder with a thin "Slicer" cutting wheel to trim and cut Kydex. Air die grinder or Dremel tool with sanding drum to clean up the edges.
Search Kydex holster making on utube. There are several really good videos that were very helpful for me. There are also some less valuable presentations .
