All great suggestions other than the oil.
We keep dunks in our bird baths and back in the day we had a pond at the power plant that was loaded with minnows. Trap a few and put them in the bird baths, but the birds like minnows too. A little protein with their water.
A good, sealed lid is going to be the cheapest.
