If it slides give it a light coat of grease, if it rotates, or any other movement unlike the slide, give it a light coat of oil.

I've been wanting to ask this 'grease/oil' question myself..with particular regards to a Browning 1886 .45-70 carbine I just bought.....everything in a 1886 lever-action is either sliding, rotating, or camming...all in close proximity and all at the same time!!

....I don't know whether to stick a greasegun in it and pump..or hose it down with CLP!?

When I put my Glock 19 though a 2000 round challenge I used TW25 on the rails and fp-10 on the barrel. No issues during the 2025 rounds fired without any cleaning or addition of lube. The fp-10 was no longer on the barrel by the end of the challenge though. TW25 was still there just dirty, I now use TW25 on the rails of most of my pistols.
