Greed ruins hunting. Nothing more ridiculous than some city slicker with more money than sense all decked out in his latest Eddie Bauer costume carrying his $10,000 firearm pretending to be a great white hunter. I'd rather not hunt at all.

Lawl, how's life out there in Norman, Hoss?

OK, so when you say what type of land, what does that mean exactly? What I do know about the property is that both used to be used for raising cattle. In fact, there may still be a farmer out (or was until very recently) a farmer for raising cattle. I've walked around a few times out there, its a mixture of grass and trees, brush, pretty far removed from any heavily traveled highway, I do recall seeing a few salt licks out there (lol, i know I'm a n00b at this :rollingla). Actually, to be more specific, its at the southeast corner of NE 108th and N Harrah Rd. THat's about all I know.

Is that $5-$15 an acre for a year or hunting season or whatever?
those are yearly lease prices,if you're wanting to lease gun season only.$200-$500 is a good estimate

Charge each hunter a trespass fee and then extra for each legal deer they kill.
$250 each and $125 for each deer they kill might be an appropriate charge.
I would ask for references before I signed a contract with them.
Only let decent folks on your property.
And let them know if they break any provision of the contract, their privileges are revoked with no refund.

Lease price solely depends upon location. Out in NW OK there's big deer, lots of food and lots of places to hide. The leases out there go for a premium. Land around central OK is generally broken up into smaller pieces when compared to out West. IMO, there's generally not as much cover or food as out West, especially if there's farm animals around. For that reason the deer generally aren't up to the "Trophy" expectations of a lot of people. Also there's usually people hunting on every section so if you let something live, it crosses a fence onto the neighbor and gets popped. That doesn't always happen, but happens alot.

This is where I'm at. I love deer hunting. Leasing land makes me feel sick. Growing up, we asked land owners and got permission. Then we'd help them fix fence or something.

I remember the time we got to hunt a piece of land just for taking the owner out for a Chicken-Fried Steak and some conversation. Unfortunately, those days are long gone, I guess.

What really makes me sick is you can't even find a place to bird hunt anymore. With deer I kinda understand, they're on somebody's land, but birds....! Heck, they migrate. They're not on anybodies land, they're just using the air space. Makes me sad at how greed and money influences everything.

If the average person can no longer afford to go hunting, then there is no "public ownership" of the wildlife resource and a poaching culture starts to take root. Poachers are not good sportsmen and don't care about limits so the wildlife resource suffers.

Other state have programs where private landowners are paid to allow public hunting on their land. This may be the answer. http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/hunting/programs/openaccess/

My parents own 160 acres in outside of Harrah and another 120 acres outside of Meeker. They were interested in leasing it out for hunting (rifle) and were wondering what the going rate is for something like that. They also own 40 acres but its within OKC limits so they were thinking about using that for bow hunting.

Anyone got some rough figures?

Where at around Harrah?

I understand what everybody is saying about how it use to be. Shoot, I wish it were too. There are alot of things today that are not what they use to be. I really don't think greed plays a big role in it; for soome yes but generally speaking, no.

Think about it. Twenty years ago a guy has 1000 acres of land that has been in his family for several generations and he just inherited it from his parents. It essentially cost him nothing. Porbably very little in property taxes, little in maintenance, etc. He may be an old school guy that doesn't hunt and enjoys people benefiting from his land.

On the other hand, if a person has just spent $1-$2 Million on a similar size piece of land he is gonna want something in return. If he is not a hunter he is going to ask for a fee. The property taxes on a $1 million piece of land are going to be around $11K-$15K per year alone. would you want to have hunters help yo reduce yor tax burden? I'm sure you would as I would. If I have that land I sure as hell am going to go with the highest bidder unless I feel uncomfortable with the way they come across to me.

I think there are just a lot more things involved with owning land these days to just let people hunt for free or because they are nice. Just my $.02.
