What kind of generator?

If I had the means I would have one that ran off of propane and a full 500 to a 1000 gallon tank.

My choice is propane because it is easy to store a large quantity of fuel and you don't have to worry about the fuel going bad like gasoline. If you want maximum flexibility, consider a tri-fuel generator. These generators will run on gasoline, natural gas or propane without any alteration required. Here is an example:

You can always get a gasoline generator, and buy a conversion kit.
The propane ones work nice on the Yamaha units.

What about underground tank? Does HOA concern go beyond visibility of tank?

Dunno. Good question. Prob is all the electric, cable, phone and gas lines that run through the yard. I would have to say that is a no go. I guess I could buy a 100 gallon tank.

You might check with code enforcement on the big tank. My mom does code stuff and her town won't allow the big propane takes because of fire and explosion risk to adjacent properties.

get what you can afford,,only if it can only run a fridge,,tv,lights,you can also use heating blankets to stay warm. Anything is better than nothing,,just the above mentioned uses very little wattage.
