When I hunted geese (only a handful times) I used 12 ga. 3" steel BB and if hit solid they'd fall....on ducks I've always used my Browning A5 12 ga. 2 3/4" #3 steel with a Carlson's stainless / extended IM choke and have always had good luck bringing them down.

If you use steel instead of other non-toxic materials, be sure that you get the fastest you can find, speed is the key to lethal loads 25-40 yds. As stated, 4-2 for decoying ducks 2-BB for decoying geese.
My reloads are in the 1500-1700 fps. range for both good out to 60 yds. Reloading Specialties recipes.
The other non-toxics are too damn expensive for my wallet.

In a SHTF scenario, round limits be dawned, for ducks use #4, #5, #6; for geese #4, #2.

Steel shot use 3" #2 or my preference #1, for geese 3" BB, BBB or my preference T. I was a guide for several years, seen many failures with steel shot, shooters thinking #2 steel was a goose load.
