What spider is this? There is a bumper crop of them at the range this year.

It seems every year there is a different spider that is prolific.

This year it is this webbuilding ground spider.

The webs are large and they stay in a small tunnel. They are not sticky. The insect can crawl out, but do get entangled sometimes from their own spiky legs and such.

Large web. Grass in all over it from a recent mowing.

Attacking a conveniently placed grasshopper.

She is about 2 inches in diameter with legs. Pretty large.

See that green Cicada at the top? I put that there Friday.

When I was young like 3rd grade I had made friends with bugs.
I was playing with a grass spider at PE at school we were all outside sitting on concrete listening to the teacher.
I guess i was not listening good enough because she came over and seen what I had beside me playing with and she stomped it flat.

WOW! I got mad and ran away from school because she killed my friend.
I capture the good spiders and let them go outside to this day.

I do not mind a Black Widow on my property but really hate the Brown Recluse.
