That actually brings up a good point. Help me decide between 300 win mag, 300 weatherby mag, 300 wsm, and 300 rum. I am looking for a mid priced bolt gun (gun for maybe $1,000?) and i will be using for long range target shooting/big game. Would like to have a heavy barrel.

I don't know about the 300RUM but think about this.

The 300 Weatherby shoots 150gr bullets about 400FPS and 165gr's about 200FPS FASTER than a 130gr out of a .270 Winchester.

That's freaking impressive, I don't care who you are. But the Win Mag is certainly no slouch. Ammo more available, at far less cost, and I'm sure it has less blast and recoil. I've shot the Weatherby Mag and it's a bear.

How about a rem 700 sendero in 300win mag.The 300 Weatherby is very expensive and harder to find. The 300 wsm is limited in bullet weight selection and I have heard the barrels erode faster than long cartridges

If you DO go with a .300 maggie, I'd go with the original and best: .300 Winchester Magnum.

But, do you realize that a 6.5 round such as the 6.5-.284 Norma has less wind drift and drop with 139s at 600 and 1,000 yards than the hottest .300 maggie, with any bullet you can think of, whether 175, 210, 220, or 240 SMKs, 210 Berger VLDs, or anything? Not to mention a lot less recoil and ammo expense. Unless you're trying to kill vehicle engines at that distance, there is no reason to go past a 6.5mm (or 7.0mm at most), UNLESS you go all the way to .50 BMG, where you get the .900-1.0 BCs.**

**Or, unless you run with a .375-.400 Cheytac with hand-milled bullets from Europe at several dollars each just for the bullets.
