They are the same.
Most people refer to the pre-1964 guns as 1894's.
and post 64 guns as 94's.
The difference is in the receiver pre-64s are steel and post 64s are winloy. Which are an alloy that doesn't blue well so they flash copperplate them then blacken the plating.
Thats also why theres a big difference in price between pre and post 64 guns. Most collectors consider post guns as shooters only.

Winchester marked the 1894 "1894" to a certain point in the production...

Then they dropped the "18" and refered to the product as the "'94".

Winchester '94's had the trademark "Winchester" in script on the upper tang for years... The the ramped front site ahead of the barrel band and a few other changes all happened during the transistion years of the mid 30's

Clues to age will also be found in the way the barrel is marked... patent and adress lines have changed over the years. Earlier guns have knurled hammers... in the 50's the serrated hammer appears. Long wood carbines were replaced with short wood one in the 50's too.
The bottom edge of the receivers have changed shape over the years... early guns are rounded and shaped a little bit.. later versions have a simpler profile.

There a a bunch of good Winchester books.. and collectors know "never say never" .. between the custom orders and transitions.... there are dozens of varients in the 94 run.

If you want a crash course on lever action guns... www.leverguns.com would be the place to start.

Great information. Thanks all.

Clearly, the pre 1964 models use better quality components. Seems post '64 models are shooters only and pre '64 models are shooters, plus are at least somewhat collectible. Is that a fair comparison?

Also, one of the main differences are in 1964, Winchester stopped using solid pins for cheaper hollow rolled pins. Still a quality rifle, but sure changed some attitudes. I love my '70 1894 just fine.
