I picked up a partial box of ammo labeled 'Winchester Western' in 308 win. They are 110gr soft point. Would these be too fragile for deer or are they more of a varmint round?
I imagine if they are placed correctly then they would do the job on deer. Is it a spire point or a round nose soft point?
A bunch of guys around here shoot deer with .223. Anything in .308 will do just fine.

Yup, a properly constructed .223 bullet will get the job done. A 110 gr. .308 doesn't meet that definition. All you do is wound the animal for no good reason.
