I'm sure he can handle it. He does very good work. He chopped a shotgun barrel for me and I could have sworn it came from the factory that way.
One of my .308s has a 26" AMU contour barrel, threaded 5/8-24 for a can.
But, have also shot many rounds without using the can and it's just fine without any muzzle brake on it.
Obviously it's much quieter with the can, plus it is possible to develop subsonic loads for shorter ranges with minimal noise.
IMO a muzzle brake is not needed for .308Win with a heavy contour barrel that is longer than 24".
You could thread it and add a muzzle brake, then later if you decide you don't like it, remove the brake and put a thread protector on it. Maybe some day you'll want to get a can for it.
