have it mounted in a case with a large plaque engraved with the details of the guns origins & a record of its family lineage. a short one sentence editorial given for each member of the family it has been passed down to, with enough blank space on the place for 20 or so more lines.

include some 30-06 ammo mounted inside the case as well.

Before you go to see it next time, order a VCI bore tube and rifle sized wrapper. Pull (carefully, and save) the current bore plug). When not in use, keep the VCI bore tube and wrapper on it. It'll keep corrosion free a long damn time in it.

I'd find a "shooter" '03 and play with it. Keep this one as it is.

If it was me it would depend on what my dad does with it. If he shoots it, so would I. If he doesn't, I would carry on the tradition. Selling it wouldn't even cross my mind.

Regardless of what my Pappy and Grandpappy did, I would chart my own course and do what I think is best for the future of the family. To me, that would be having a unique heirloom to shoot and enjoy with the kids and grandkids, rather than having an old wall hanger on an old fart's wall that quickly loses its novelty, and might just get a glance or two in passing when family comes to visit. It would be a great way to connect their heritage with the shooting sports, and would make it more likely that they enjoy shooting as much as you do. Even if you shoot it, it will still be around longer than you, your kids, your grandkids, or their kids if you teach them how to take good care of it and tell them to to the same for the next generation. You know another good way to keep the bore clean and corrosion free? Put some rounds through it every now and then, and give it a good cleaning and oiling!

Whoever said to sell it and buy a used one to shoot if you must shoot one doesn't understand the priceless value that an heirloom like that can have. How much money would you make by selling this? Maybe a couple thousand bucks at most? Now how much is it worth to you to have a lifetime of good times on the range with the next generations of the family, and knowing that because of the tradition you started, future generations will be doing the same long after you are gone? You can't put a price on that.
