Last weekend was our 4th year to host a Wounded Warrior Project dove hunt with Walker Hunts. 16-20 disabled vets came to enjoy a weekend of skeet shooting, dove hunting, and great meals. About half of these guys have been coming back every year. Very humbling experience to be involved and see the support that comes from local businesses and private individuals to sponsor this. Way more humbling to hear what these guys have sacrificed for all of us and have to live with everyday. Everything from lodging to meals to shotgun shells to licenses are donated. Had a fun filled morning of shooting clays Saturday with a lunch served by the Blue Star Mother chapter of Sand Springs followed by a great evening dove hunt. This post is in no way meant to pat myself or the rest of the volunteers on the back or as an advertisement but rather to let people know that when you see the Wounded Warrior Project or Folds of Honor or Healing Heroes or any of the other DAV organizations to know that they are very worthwhile causes. If you ever get the oppurtunity to be involved with one, take it. You won't be disappointed.
While we stress about providing a good hunt and a fun weekend, I believe these guys enjoy the camaraderie and socializing of fellow DAVs as much as anything. Shooting birds is just a bonus!
