I DO, however, want bands of quasi-deputized citizen vigilantes to gun down gang bangers in the street.

I always had a romanticized version of the Earps and Doc in my head then finally realized they were a tad bit better than the bad guys and had badges when the bad guys didn't. Of course, the bushwhacking of the good guys tips the scale with lead bricks. Requiring their guns and knives to be hung up before entering certain town limits really defanged the cowboys and once again made everyone equal to each other but on a less lethal level.
I've read quite a lot on Earp. Man of courage, to be sure, but he was a real POS, as were his adversaries.
The Sheriff, being elected by the people, SHOULD be in charge and No Cops needed.
BUT, as Behan shows, and recent elections, fraud exists, just corrupt, bought and owned politicians.
Tombstone is just a small pic of society as a whole.
The more I read about Earp and the whole thing that went down in Tombstone the more I can relate to the Clantons' and "The Cowboys". Yes, they were outlaws, no doubt about it, but what gave Earp the right to infringe on the 2nd Amendment. IMO, not a damn thing. Also, like TK already said, there wasn't much differentiating Earp from the "outlaws" he was policing. When it comes down to it he (Earp) was cut from the same cloth.

I had been thinking this particular conversation over and over for months. I finally worked up the nerve to post it knowing I would possibly get flamed for advocating gun control. I DO NOT advocate gun control but in his day, it seemed to have worked for every jurisdiction he was employed by he was hired to "clean up".
A lot of old western movies have the same premise of "hanging your guns at the door" initiated by the new sheriff/hero/GGWAG.
I am going to say one more thing. For the common citizen not wearing a gun after the cowboy days was the norm for over 100 years. Now, I won't go anywhere without it and two reloads, I even carry one around the house.

Recent studies have revealed that 100% of all home invasions happen at home.....so being armed at home is prudent :-)

It WORKED because there was NO POLICE PRESENCE until the Earps arrived. Just as today, in Dumbasscrap run cities like Detroit, Baltimore, Portland, etc. The summer of "peaceful protest" had the police told to stand down.
A strong police presence, unarmed the criminals, bash a few heads and society returns to calm and civil.
Not advocating gun control, but strong proponent of CRIMINAL CONTROL and some head bashing may be required.
