As someone who has worked in law enforcement I can say that if you must get out of your car and you know ahead of time that a dog is going to be an issue..... just get out with your cruiser shotgun. I carried a couple of high brass 6 shot in my center console just for such and occasion. Thankfully I never had to shoot a dog. But you can bet your butt that if a nasty sucker came at me I would have put it down and slept like a baby that night.
I did however figure out later on that OC spray works really really well on dogs.... they don't like it one bit.... and even just a little bit gets near their face they bolt. So there are options.
I would never just start popping pistol rounds off in a neighborhood unless I was completely out of options..... but a handgun is a bad choice for a dog......
