After watching the video a few times and reading about his history of being in prison, I think he probably reacted to the way he was used to living. When attacked, fight back and fight to win.
...on second thought, maybe he did know something and they threatened him? Some gangsta crap from his days as a convict maybe? Thus he beat hell out of them and we don't know the real reason? I'm gonna mellow out on this and be non-judgmental based on a youtube video.
I would say the reason is because he was attacked.
This. Through my eyes, and from the angle of the camera with people standing in the way it was tough to have a full understanding of how it all happened. To those asking why it was being filmed, the individual doing the filming likely saw things starting to escalate and thought "This could get interesting, I am going to video this." I am not one to think "I should video this" but I would 100% be thinking "This could get interesting, I am watching this."
When watching what I saw was man and woman argue, woman slaps man, man attempts some reactive action and misses. Then two (not small) women begin to rush counter, man runs and gets what looks like a long garden hose sprinkler head and starts going to town. He strikes them both multiple times in the head and once they are down he stands there over them making sure they don't get up. The repeated beating of the woman on the right makes me think she was attempting to get back up. To continue fighting or get the hell out of dodge no one knows. I would guess the latter after the beating they just took. He had no way of knowing and that is where I think his past and prison experience took over. He didn't beat them until the threat was over, he beat them until they were unconscious basically. Some may say "That is when the threat is over." I don't necessarily disagree.
I just would hate to be in this man's situation. Man v. woman(women) is at play, did he have disparity of force? Two women v. violent felon? Plus he brought a weapon into the picture to even the odds. 1 armed man v 2 unarmed women. At least they're all the same color. If the worker was white or the women white...what a mess that would be. In reality I think we'd all agree it doesn't matter but I'm a realist and know society wouldn't see it that way.
I would also like to add that while watching I thought "That is fight or flight right there and this guy doesn't appear to have many frequent flier miles."
Sheesh. Mr. Ersland just can't seem to stay out of trouble.
I don't know; but it may come down to someone making a decision about whether or not he applied a disparate degree of force and if it was deadly force etc.

Well he did fracture her skull so...that's deadly force in my book.
