I just follow far enough back (good old "two second rule") that there's plenty of room for anything that falls off the vehicle in front of me to hit the ground before I get to it.

Of course, that leaves an opening for others to cut across three lanes in the gap ahead of me - but that's all right, they can take the ice hits.

I try and not follow very close too, but it is pretty unnerving to meet an 18 wheeler as an 8'x10' sheet of ice goes airborne. Although I wouldn't get up there and risk my neck to de ice it.

my thoughts exactly.... but at highway speeds, I try to get 4-6 seconds following distance....
If you're getting hit by ice debris, you are following way to close

Right now, there is no state law requiring drivers to remove ice from the roof of their cars. That means if you're hit by ice from a passing vehicle, you are responsible for the repairs.

Practice a safe following distance...also the news did a thing on this a while back with a OKCPD officer, he said if your vehicle is hit by ice peeling off of another vehicle it's your own fault. Law only requires the driver clear his windows enough for safe travel.
