These stoopid kids and their stoopid phones...a rant.

Funny thing is my Dad does this, he would rather text than talk on his cell phone. lol Only cause he uses some prepaid plan were he can send 3 text for every 1 min of talk. But I hear ya, I'm not even sure what the best way to reach my kid is, even when she is in the next room. lol

It's called change.

Things have changed from a communication perspective. The trend has moved to electronic communication, email and text. In some ways it is more efficient, and easier to communicate with a number of people at the same time, with less time investment. Think about a typical phone call, there is a reason for the call typically. Time is spent on a greeting, small talk, etc, then you get to the question, it's answered, and with kids then there is typically some backlash, then the call closes. With text it's short and concise, less time investment, some find it easier to be more bold in text as well.

In some ways it is really nice too, really easy for me to send my kids(all older than 23) a text on a day when I might be thinking about them, let them know I am and that I hope they have a good day. Same with the wife.

Unfortunately written communication leaves a lot open for misconception as well, we see it all the time here on the forum, I see it regularly in email and texts as well.

I'm not saying I like it, but I have adopted the change to a degree, something you have to do, you either change and adopt, or you stay where you are wondering why things changed...

I like it when my friends call. It's easier to catch up on what's been going on rather than texting. I've adapted to the digital age. When a conversation involves a iterative process it pisses me off when people try to do it via text and I eventually tell them call me or forget it.

I hate talking on the phone. Hate hate HATE it. And I do not answer calls from numbers I don't know on my cell phone. But texts are a much more convenient and less committed (for want of a better term?) source of communication for me. Replying to a quick text allows me to get right back to whatever I was doing, often without ever even stopping. I text constantly at work, back and forth to my desk checking my phone along with tasks at work. Easy as pie. But sitting down and answering a phone call, even a 2-3 minute call when I am busy is a major inconvenience. At least to me it is.

But mostly, I just frigging HATE talking on the phone. If I could handle all my necessary communication from work by texting, I'd be extremely happy.

Here, but occasionally There.
I have begun to accept texting, but for a very different reason. I don't like doing it, but I'd rather give the recipient of my "call" the option of reading the text later if they happen to be driving. I don't want them driving and thinking, "I need to take this call 'cause it's from Terry." Yeah, I know that some text and drive, but the folks I send texts to know that I find it very important that they check the message at their next stop, not while they are driving.

My biggest problem with texting is from my upbringing. The nuns would rack our knuckles for mis-spelled words. I spend half my time texting correcting words and adding punctuation. The text I get from my kids are hard to decypher, but they seem to understand thier gibberish.

The thing I don't like is seeing families out at dinner and everyone is on a gadget. For me road trips, everyone is on a gadget while I drive away. Although I kind of like that, alone with my thoughts, can be kind of nice.
