There isn't 5 dollars of material or science in any single pair. It's all profit. (think it was adidas?)

So this is somewhat of a niche of mine given my interest in athletics (track & field), running and triathlon. The raw cost is actually around $15 for a cheaper shoe, $30 for a premium but it's NOT all profit when you consider shipping, retail costs like salary and overhead, and wholesale expenses down the supply chain.

It's about the same for the major, international premium brands like Nike, Adidas, Asics, and later Puma. I am sure New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, Under Armor, Mizuno, and others are similar.

The Swoop never was that great of a shoe. They've had more failures than successes. Not a ton of technology in a shoe. They did become a fashion. Nike put a swoop on a pig and made everyone think it's a racehorse.
Too big to fail mentality. An omen for failure.

I doubt shipping has much to do with it. Not to start a fight, but I just bought an Item on ebay that had to be shipped from China.
With shipping the cost was less than $3.00. I thought it was an item in the US, but no, it came all the way from china, so the shipping company, manufacturer, and finally the US post office made money off of the item. Granted shoes have a higher volume on the container ship and would cost more, but I was totally shocked I actually bought something at that price delivered from China. Link is for a jeep, but mine was for a tundra. Too lazy to keep looking, but you get my drift.

and don't forget marketing.....hence the lucrative contracts.

Hate to say it, this is a brilliant business move, the more I think about it. Nike is losing market share and this will shake up things with their target demographic. Now their gear will have a dual meaning and will have less to do with sports on an amount of their gear, I'm sure.

I think Kaep is a douche, but Nike is being business smart whether you boys like it or not. Heck, half of you admitted you weren't customers anyways. Oh well, lotsa good memes will come out of this....

Oh yeah, those marketing contracts cost way more than shipping costs.

It's all broken down in the links, Dennis. Shipping is around a dollar from Asia to the US, plus some more for packaging and duty/customs fees, and a little more from the west coast to its sale destination.

But that with everything else starts to add up to more than only $5 like many people believe. No one profits a smooth $95 on a $100 shoe.

Ok, My comment to be clear about the $5 is what it costs to produce the shoe at the manufacturer. Costs just keep rising from there. BUT, there is still a heck of a mark up with the high end shoes.
