And more about a complete change in mindset ...

I have become much more interested in maintaining a small ecosystem (or actually several smaller ecosystems) and less about "prepping" in the traditional sense that people think about prepping.

@Timmy59 has been instrumental in this shift. I LOVE reading his posts and following the progress on his little slice of heaven. I will never be able to raise cattle ... Or even have a goat ... But I DO firmly believe I will be able to grow enough fruits and vegetables to be able to feed my critters and substantially cut my feed bill with fermented food, a fodder system and a mealworm and earthworm "farms" and garden leftovers from my dehydrating, fermenting and canning.

To that end, does anyone have any books they've read, bloggers or YouTube channels they follow regularly or any personal stories they can share with regard to creating a as close to self-sustaining garden and small animal farm as you can get in town on what is basically a 1/3 acre of land??

Luckily for me, OKC encourages water harvesting and front yard gardening. I only have enough grass left in the backyard to basically walk from the patio to the compost pile. Enough for the dogs to do their biz at the back fence and roll around in grass by the patio in the front. I LOVE it. They have adjusted pretty well -- especially when I open up the gate to the duck/chicken pen and they can run around the shed and up and down the fence on the southside -- and play with the neighbor's dogs along the fence.

I can hardly wait to start "tearing up" the front yard next spring. Give me something to do in the meantime fellas!! Thanks!!

That is SO KIND of you!!

:clap3::goodmorning::rubhands:.. What we're doing is for several reasons.. Possible necessity,,, Also because we enjoy being outdoors and having this kind of accomplishment / lifestyle.. The wife had cancer and we are well aware of the quality of food that is marketed.. I'm looking at retiring in the next 18-24 months and will need something to keep me occupied.. Hence a produce stand with country produced goods.. Small cash flow and rewarding activity..
We won't have a bank roll to travel the country, plus I'm not a fan of the greater population.. I once knew no strangers, now the wife and animals are preferred company.. If I'm riding the tractor or planting something I'm at peace and the worries or pain seem to fade from mind.. We're just beginners at this and have a LOT, I do mean a LOT to learn.. LOL, I'm currently better at killing then growing at this point.. But keep on a trucking.. Gardening with Leon is a favorite utoob channel, The fellow I posted in the raised bed thread is also good but doesn't offer how to so much but the ideas are there.. Seems failures come before successes, but chit happens.. I'm not able to offer any knowledge to speak of but you sure do get a BIG round of applause for wanting to do what your thinking.. It's like stepping back in time to what Grandma and poppa did only with a possible different mindset because of what we see coming.. I am a blessed soul to have the wife and life I currently do.. No complaints in our little bubble other than there's no peat moss to be found.. Thank you for the mention and best wishes on your endeavors..

I remember (several decades ago) that Mother Earth News had an article on buying a gun for your home.

They recommended a double-barrel shotgun. With a variety of loads, it's good for home defense, hunting, and varmint control. Plus, if you have small children, it's too heavy for them to play with, and can be loaded quickly (if you prefer to keep it unloaded).

I don't think (?) we ever had a subscription, but sometimes we'd splurge on various magazines when we could spare a buck or two.

There you have it.. The "fix" one thing leads to another, I danced to that years back.. With imagination and research 1 can pull off some really cool things.. Growing bugs is a market.. Most anyone can tailor something to benefit they're life.. There are utoobs of people making a good buck on little dirt, of course it requires time and knowhow and a market with population.. Been said countless times, possibilities are endless, imagination and determination..
