Look at the novel One Second After by John Matherson. Well researched and even addresses some of the specific thought processes you are looking at like medications etc.
I've read one by that name, but by William R Forstchen (I think the main character is John Matherson. It was a good book , but I haven't read any of the sequels.

Amazon.com: One Second After (A John Matherson Novel Book 1) eBook : Forstchen, William R., Newt Gingrich, William D. Sanders: Kindle Store

Edit: I feel for the guy watching his child slowly die, from lack of insulin. Not my particular med, but might be some day.

I feel like I can survive quite a while if I’m not killed by someone trying to take what I have, but my wife is on several meds and probably wouldn’t make it long. In my dreams, I’d like to be able to get to my OK place to ride out a SHTF, but in reality, I’m better off staying at my place here in TX. I do keep some supplies prepositioned in case something happens while I’m up there.

I’m best prepared where I am but I’m in a metropolitan area. My hunting ground/cabin is only an hour away that had a lot to do with the decision to buy what and where I did. Still thinking mostly as an option for my kids and grandkids for years ahead.

I have eaten raw carp and raw deer and muscles from city ponds and drank gutter water that flowed down the street after someone washed their car.
I have drank in a creek that had a dead bloated maggot infested dog 60 feet upstream from me.

I am still here.
Darn under cooked snapping turtle gave me salmonella when I had ran away from home for 2 weeks.
3 days of that I decided I needed to go home.

I do not take any meds but I do not know if I am sick as I do not go to the doctor for anything unless I can't tape it or glue it back on.

F the doctors they just find things wrong with you.
If I am not dying I am not going.

If the crap did hit the fan electric is the last thing on my list to have.

Knife, cordage, Gun and ammo.
That is what I take into the deer woods and probably what i would bug out with if all cars and electric and running water ceased.
