Robert A. Heinlein fan since a teenager. Many of his books contained political ideology and it's debatable as to whether he was a socialist or capitalist (I think the latter.) In one of his books "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" he brought forth the concept of "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" which is of course absolutely true. So TANSTAAFL is the name I chose.

Boy, mine isn’t at all interesting compared to you guys. Decided to join my first forum over 10 years ago and of course one of the questions in signing up is “user name”. Wasn’t prepared at all and the first thing that popped into my head was Firpo. My great-grandfather aka Papa Billy had an Airedale he named Firpo after an Argentinian Heavy Weight Boxer from the 1920s.

Back in the early '90s when online messaging and email was still a relatively new thing, I tried name after name only to find someone else already had it.

I decided I should try to find something that no one else would think of. So, being from Oklahoma, I decided it should be something representing my home state.

It eventually came down to our state reptile, the Collared Lizard, better known as a Mountain Boomer. By shortening the name to fit the limited data size of the time it became "mtnboomer." I had an account here in the past, but after a hiatus, I returned and because of an email account I could no longer access I has to re-register and my handle got changed to "mtnboomr."

Jarhead buddy had a dog named Rommel” said I was the first person to get it. Dog was built and resembled a fox in form so that added to it.
