So, my amazing father-in-law gave me a 1971 Chevrolet C10 pickup. It has a freshly rebuilt 337 motor, with a three speed automatic transmission. My question here is would you keep that transmission?, or would you change it out for a turbo 350? or? Are they basically the same thing? Thanks in advance.

Leave it alone. That Hyrdamatic is a good transmission. Question is is it a 350 or 400? I bet if the truck is an original 327 it will be a 350 Turbo Hydramatic. The signage states it was a 350 from factory. Wonder why it was replaced with a 327? Hopefully he still has the original 350 it came with.

Nice gift you received. Are you going to restore it?

Yes sir. I am going to restore it. But add a few style upgrades. Rims. Dual exhaust. Stereo. Ill redo the paint to the original look.

Had 3 of those trucks, 2 1970's and a 1972. Wish I never sold any of them, those were well built trucks. One of life's regrets. Don't make my mistake, restore and cherish it.

This one belonged to my Wife’s grandfather. Then her Father, now me. It will stay in the family. Love that blue on yours.

Upgrade to a 4 speed or leave it alone.

The overdrive will do wonders for gas mileage and driveability, but that 3 speed is bomb proof.

Measure trans to determine if TH350 or 400. The 400 is longer.

You can just look at the pan shape to tell if it is a TH350 or 400. A 200 4R is an overdrive transmission that will directly swap from a 350, but the 200 4R is a little harder to find. If you are just driving around locally and it is shifting okay, leave it as is. I have a 1972 C20 and really enjoy driving it.

I also wonder why it was swapped to a 327.

My FIL seems to think it is factory stock. The 327 that is. I can ask.

So I called my FIL. He said the 327 is a different motor than what came in it. BUT he said I thinks the 327 was a factory motor for this vehicle. Also he said it has 4 wheel disc brakes and was one of the first models to have that. I “think” I read somewhere that that model came with a 350 from the factory. He also seems to think the trans is a turbo 350 hydromatic, or the equivalent.
