I just put a Super Winch on my car hauler, my thought for powering it was to mount a 12 car battery on the trailer by the winch. It is a new trailer with the little 12v battery that sets the brakes when the trailer comes off the hitch (or the switch trips). What I am wondering is if I can substitute the car battery for the little battery without frying the wiring harness on the tow vehicle when I start using the winch. I thought the voltage through the harness would keep the charge up on the battery, but, I'm worried that when I start using the winch, it will draw too much amperage through the harness in the vehicle.

Thats very possible. I would run another conductor from the battery to the back bumper and use a slide connector similar to what an electric forklift uses.

It needs its own battery that can deliver enough current.

I'd only do it (vehicle charging) if I had a battery isolator and even then if the battery was dead it would draw more then the trailer wires could handle. there are ways to remedy this but for the trouble its not worth it in my opinion. our dump trailer could never get charged quick enough that way

If it does more than likely it will just blow fuse. I would also run a new wire with circuit breaker (no changing blown fuses) at car battery. Don't use solid copper wire, use braided

I wouldn't do it if I were you. You don't want to inadvertently drain the brake battery. There are ways to prevent that, but they're complicated and generally just not worth it.

You can use the car battery in place of the small battery just need to run a large battery wire seperate from the trailer wiring connector as previously posted. The car battery would actually be more reliable than the small break away battery.
