223/5.56 ammo

What factory round would be a good choice for hunting? I have not carried this for deer but may this fall while letting my son carry 270 (hunting together). My barrel 16" with 1-7 twist and rifle will shoot 223 or 5.56. I want a heavier bullet but not sure on which one, soft point or BTHP or maybe ?
