I’ve read that this can be safely done but does anyone have first hand experience with what to expect in accuracy and range differences?

Expect Minute of Man accuracy. 2.5 MOA on a good day. Your rifle might shoot it better than that and it might do a lot worse. Depends on makers too.

My FAL shoots LC M80 ball at about 2.5 moa. Shoots ZQ1 M80 from 2 to 3 moa.

I’ve shot quite a bit of 7.62 and .308 out of a Browning lever rifle. The .308 is slightly more accurate, but there is noticeably less recoil using 7.62 rounds. I’d say just give it a try and see which ones work best for you.

Savage axis precision here. 147gr barnal crap shoots 4 inch at 100. Tula 165gr shoots nickel size at 100 probably better if I wasn't so wobbly. Page 14 of owners manual says to use 168gr.
