Very cool old gun.
I would shoot it f it was mine and kill a deer with it so the gun feels like it is useful.
Same way I feel about my old cars. They want to be driven.

See if you can hit up someone at the JM Davis Museum on preserving it. And that scabbard! Such a cool piece of history there.

I'd definitely look at keeping it preserved with it in that good of a condition. Probably some wax or Ballistol at the very most for cleaning, but very very likely a wax that the museums use.

Factory letters are cool if its a special gun with special features and rare options...but if its not, the factory letter will be pretty disappointing.

I got one for my dad 2 years ago for a 1866 and it basically said "Your gun was made in 1896" or whatever, and it cost $75 to get what I already knew put on letterhead LOL.

I say leave it as it is and enjoy it. They are cool old guns even if its not worth tens of thousands of doll hairs.
