We like to watch Shark Tank. Some of the ideas are fantastic. Others not so much. Perfumes/odor based products general do very poorly on there and there's a reason:

One of the sharks, Daymon John, once said "There's only one industry with higher markups than perfume - and it's not legal" This translates to big companies defending their turf and share of the industry with great vigor. It's impossible for a little guy to gain ANY market share in this field. Bluntly put: you don't mess with another dealers street corner. This keeps prices high, margins through the roof and competition down - and that's just the perfume industry.

People way over pay for jewelry. It's sick how much mark up there is on diamonds and gem stones in particular. A lot of high end watches hold their value or appreciate.

As for every kiss beginning with Kay....does that mean you have to spend money to get a kiss? Because there's a name for women like that...
Lol true and A guy could get a lot more than a kiss for a whole lot less than a diamond.

The entire diamond wedding ring "tradition" is a marketing scam. This is a great article on how Madison Ave made a "Diamond Forever".

Women wanted their men to spend money on “a washing machine, or a new car, anything but an engagement ring,” Ms. Gerety said. “It was considered just absolutely money down the drain.”

Still, the agency set an ambitious goal: “to create a situation where almost every person pledging marriage feels compelled to acquire a diamond engagement ring.”

As the grandson of a Gods-Honest jeweler (the kind that bought, set and cut his own diamonds) I can't help but laugh at the "chocolate' diamons and the "colored" diamonds. They're essentially hawking flawed diamonds as something thats worth MORE. I am sure he rolled over in his grave the first time that stupid chocolate diamond ad ran.

We have had that same discussion. Must be from the same marketing genius that sold Starpukes as good coffee.
