Article is somewhat confusing, at first they say it was AP, then say its tracer.
What caliber was it? I know there IS armor piercing tracer...but do you think thats what this was?

Information critical to forming an opinion on the charges is not in that article. It will be iteresting to see whether he made real deal prohibited ammo, or was merely manufacturing commercial ammo without an FFL.

For example, M856 (tracer) wouldn't be considered AP, but M855A1 would. I Don't even know if they make an M856A1?

M856A1 isn't AP in any sense so yeah. I dont expect we will be seeing M855A1 ever

This article says he sold the shooter armor piercing bullets and 720 rounds of tracers. It does not say the tracers were illegal. he was arrested for not having a license to manufacture armor-piercing bullets.
I'm not sure what they mean by "modified" the bullet to make it armor-piercing. I am guessing they are saying he reloaded a regular case with a ss109 or m855 bullet.
My question would be, did it make any difference if it was a lead core FMJ bullet or some sort of armor-piercing bullet.
The only reason I say that is, I think if he did something illegal that caused the death of someone else is one thing, but merely selling a reload that he was unlicensed to sell is something else.
I would say that the media coverage is an attempt to continue Obama's 2015 effort to make some types of bullets illegal.

I've seen it commented that he had a 06 FFL, which means if he loaded anything other than true AP rounds, he's good to go. This case should go the way of the Lucky Gunner case and be dismissed.

what would a "true AP round" be?

M955? Current M855 and 856 is not classified as AP by the BATF. I've read that the M855a1 is.

The Army says M855A1 will penetrate 3/8" steel plate at 300m, so yeah, its far better at piercing armor than M855. I couldn't tell you how much harder AR500 is over plate steel is though. Or ESAPI plates either
