I've had the Samsung Captivate since July and I have none of the normal issues I hear about. My only complaint is that it doesn't sync my Facebook with my contacts so I don't have any caller ID pictures.

Captivate here and none of these issues.

Some of the apps out there cause a lot of the issues folks are having (or make things a lot worse). I just updated Dolphin Browser and it hangs things and slows the phone down badly. Photobucket's app hangs my camera.

I use the pay-for version of Advanved Task Killer and keep most of the crap controlled at the process level pretty tightly.

I haven't even rooted mine yet and the AT&T bloatware us kept at bay for the most part. I'm getting closer to rooting it due to some minor annoyances with some of AT&T's restricrions (Kyes, etc..).

I was wondering about this, so late last night, I took off almost all of the apps I put on. We'll see if that makes a difference.

Does the paid version of Task Killer make much of a difference over the freeware?

What is the dolphin browser I keep hearing about, and what is so special about it?

Dolphin does a lot more native flash stuff than either the default browser or Opera (I've honestly not been too impressed with Opera for Android - I use it exclusively at home, but its hoaky on my Galaxy S) and it was quite a bit more versatile than the native Android browser before they updated it (the dolphin browser that is, I've not updated my phone's OS). I suspect a new update will come along soon and fix the sluggishness of how it launches and handles a few things so I'll be back to using it again.

The paid version of ATK doesn't do too much more than the free one, but it gives you just a few more options if you want to really get into the specifics of what you want killed all the time - and no ads (I broke a lot of stuff before backing it off to just allow what I wanted). Its not a perfect solution, but I wanted to use the phone without rooting it for a bit to see how good/bad it was. Its manageable and not too shabby right now, so when I root it, I'm expecting to be even more impressed.

I'll say this - a lot of the apps out there can be replaced with lighter, better apps that do the same thing without the need for a task killer - not all of them, but quite a few.

My phone is actually quite stable, but a lot of the apps I've seen want way too much control over the phone so I just go without - be aware that a lot of this stuff is basically spyware and collecting info about you in order to use the free app.

My mom's DroidX actually had a few apps out there that forced her to hard-reset/restore-to-factory the phone to undo what they did (the face-down auto-quiet app or whatever its called is famous for this).

Sloppy app makers who don't test everything are just a part of the Android world I guess - they seem to be getting better, but there are so many platforms out there that you've got to be careful and read reviews before installing.

Still - I love mine and wouldn't trade it for an iPhone (it is very remnant of the Nokia Symbian phones I used to own - very customizable, but you've got to be careful about certain things).

I prefer it over the default browser mainly because of the tabbed browsing. The native app has separate pages, sure, but it's inconvenient switching over, where Dolphin has tabs laid out just like FF, IE, Chrome, etc.

Kies isn't worth rooting for IMHO, I use google for my personal contacts and am connected to exchange for my district business contacts.

What is worth rooting for is the ability to do a nandroid backup (clock work mod rom manager) and Titanium backup for your apps and data, as well as the voodo lag fix.

ATK is a hinderance when you go to 2.2 the stock process manager does a better job I have found out. I am running designgears cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.1 right now going to flash again soon.

The wife is running dg's eclair cognitiion 2.1.7 going to flash her up to the same level as mine once I am satisfied with his froyo build.

Neither of us have had random shutdown problems, personally I would warranty the phone Stan, I have a ton of apps and crap on my phone and no issues.

Yeah - google's syncing is cool and all, but I still like maintaining a local copy of some sort for all my stuff (in usable format - I use other devices that like to sync with outlook or something else for contacts and it just pisses me off that AT&T prevents Kies simply because of tethering).

I'd like to tether too, but its not at the top of my list. I haven't jumped on the Froyo bandwagon yet because I know a few of my apps don't run well on it and I honestly haven't had the time to really look into rooting it and replacing the ROM yet - I definitely will (and will probably be asking folks like yourself some questions if I can't find what I'm looking for on XDA developers).

DG over on XDA is releasing just about everything he does in an odin package now as long as you can three button boot into recovery you can get to download mode and flash with odin it's that simple, plus all his roms are pre rooted, no need to hassle with rooting to flash with odin.

What apps do you have that don't play well with froyo?

The only reason to root prior to flashing a design gears rom is to get your android device ID now, current cooked froyo roms all have the same device ID which is causing some app brain market issue. If you haven't received the JH7 ota update you can get your sim unlock code, but if you have already gotten your ota update your out of luck at&t realized they oopsied and left that code buried in database file and overwrote it and disabled the wired tethering capability that they forgot about when they released the phone.

I like the froyo wireless router function, it's nice to be able to tether to my phone without carrying a cable around.

Man, for some reason replacing a ROM has always been on the back burner for me - my friend keeps trying to get me to do it as well, but I don't know why I have a hang-up on it.

I don't think I've had the OTA update yet, so I appreciate the advice on that sim unlock code.

I can't even remember which apps I downloaded that stated (in the user reviews) that they didn't work with Froyo, but I'd almost bet there's been an update to them by now.

You might have me talked into rooting mine now the more I think about it. Just got to get time.
