I have been friends with a guy from high school for about 8 years now. Were best friends. He recently got locked up in TX. I sent him a few money orders. The jail said they couldent put the money on his books bc they wernt westrn union. So they got put in his propery. The next day his Mom went there go get the money and there were only 2 of the 5 money orders I sent him. The jail told my friend they lost them and there sorry. Cant they be held acountable for the loss of someones property?
I bet filing the appropriate paperwork is about your only recourse. That sucks man but you are doing a good thing by trying to help your buddy out. Hopefully he can get things straightened out once he does his time. Maybe someone else has more experience with the system and knows what specific paperwork you will need to fill out. Good luck!
Any way to see if they were cashed? I have had lost MOs refunded before. Sounds more like they might have been stolen.
Thats what im thinking. By someone in the mail room. As soon as they find a m/o there suppost to document it. But they cant see in the book becuase things are written over.... I'm not sure what that means maybe scribbled out idk. Cant the Jail get in trouble over this im pretty pissed that my money didnt reach my friend.

Money orders are about the worst thing to send in the mail. Anybody can forge them and pocket the cash. You need to send certified mail where somebody has to sign for it. Then there is a paper trail.
If you have a choice of states to get locked up in, make Texas your last choice.
They have lots of prisoners, and are not too careful how they treat them. Having had someone locked up there for some time, I can assure you your friend will be fortunate to emerge in one piece and in good health. I suggest writing off the cash. Nothing like making your friend a target of retaliation by the high quality of folk who currently have power over him.
Prison sucks anyplace, but it sucks worse in Texas. CB
