I know this ain't a computer forum, but its the only forum I'm a member of so I hope one of y'all can help me out.

I recently got to Afghanistan and they've got Internet provided to us for personal use, it's through hughes net. Anyhow, my laptop computer won't let me view most websites on this network. I can look at Facebook, and that's just about it. Skype and Dropbox work just fine though, and I can connect my iPad to the wireless and I've got no problems, everything displays just fine. Anyhow, my pc is running windows 7, and neither IE nor Firefox will do anything more than just Facebook. When I try to look at Fox News, or Drudge, or pretty much anything else it says "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or blah blah blah blah..."

I've tried turning my firewall off to no avail. I'm using Kaspersky antivirus. I don't really no what else to do, I sure hope someone can help me out.

It's a conspiracy!

Try resetting IE to defaults, and resetting the winsock settings. Also make sure DHCP is on, if you have a static IP, maybe DNS server is wrong?

go into your network settings (start, control panel, network and internet, network connections, lan properties, TCP/IPv4) & make sure you have DNS set to "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

if its already set to that, do this

start, run, type "cmd", enter
type "nslookup cnn.com"
you should see
Name: cnn.com
Addresses: 157.166.226.25
157.166.226.26
157.166.255.18
157.166.255.19

if you don't, post what you get.

copy & paste this into a browser address: http://157.166.226.25/ - this will bypass DNS & go strait to cnn.com

post results.

if nslookup returns a good query, but the direct IP entry produces the same error, I'd look suspiciously at your AV.

if your AV has some form of network security, which it looks like it does, it could be the culprit. uninstalling it might help.

if he can replicate the issue in firefox as well as IE i'd advise not modifying any settings within IE. the root cause is something global on the host, not application specific misconfig.

Alright, I wasn't able to find the TCP/IPv4 option, the furthest down that path it went is Network and Internet. My options after that were Network and Sharing Center, Home Group, and Internet Options.

I went to the command prompt and got everything you said I should see, but when I typed the IP address in the address bar I got the same junk I've been getting.

network & sharing center, change adapter settings (upper left), right click on the adapter - properties.

if you're getting dns resolves from nslookup its not a dns issue. i'd try turning off the internet security portions of the anti virus, OR - completely uninstalling kapersky & going with a less invasive AV solution.

i advise the free version of
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

With Windows 7, select Network and Sharing center, on the left, you'll see Change Adapter Setting, select it. Here you'll see Local Area Connection, right-click, properties. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Make sure both radio buttons for "Obtain ______ Automatically" are selected. Also, under internet options, select connections, LAN settings. Verify that the only box checked is "Automatically detect settings." Lastly, open cmd from run. type ipconfig /dnsflush
