They could've easily gone to his office and taken him into custody with no violence, but someone had to get their breach/bang/clear on. 
Before you guys start trying to argue an early morning no-knock was unnecessary, you should know more about the type of person we're dealing with here. Apparently he had sued someone about a mailbox location a few years ago. You can't really be too careful with this type. If not for NPR, we might not even be aware of this highly relevant information.
