Isn't CBS News one of those MSM sources that you are always railing against cause they can't be trusted to tell the truth?
If so, why are using CBS News as a legitimate news source in the OP now???

So CBS has ONE reporter who's willing to examine this issue fairly and impartially. I think it's an indictment of them that they only have one. JMO, YMMV

I have my doubts about that being the reason for F&F, A side benefit they would have loved to have but not the main reason. Powerline has a pretty good piece on it giving some of the reason for and against.

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archiv...d-furious-intended-to-promote-gun-control.php

That is an incredibly short sighted article that's conveniently leaving out several important facts. If Americans had even a miniscule shred of memory in their sugar substitute addled brains, they'd remember the HUGE push by the Obama Administration for gun control using Mexican cartel violence as the excuse. They implemented a coordinated effort between the DoJ, DHS and State Dept. that was working hand in hand with Mexican officials to push for further restrictions, making wild claims about 90% of the guns used criminally in Mexico coming from the U.S., which was a blatant lie.

Add the fact that there's a sister operation to F&F called Castaway in Florida, which would suggest that this is not an isolated program that was the brainchild of a field level DoJ attorney or ATF agent in Phoenix. Further, if it were a renegade op developed in the field, DoJ and Obama would be more than willing to throw the perpetrators to the wolves. That they haven't is a conspicuous oversight. More to the point, not one single official in the DoJ or BATFE have been placed on paid leave pending outcome of the investigation, which is SOP for any agency upholding any level of professional standards. Worse yet, William G. McMahon, William D. Newell and David Voth all received post F&F promotions, the worst of which was McMahon, who was promoted to deputy assistant director of the ATF's Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations (the division that investigates misconduct by employees and other issues, to include whistleblowers of the type that broke the F&F story).

I'll add one more item for consideration. We're talking about an op that directly authorized the criminal introduction of so-called "assault rifles" in large quantities, into the sovereign territory of a neighboring nation. Do you really think some low level supervisory field agent or attorney approved this on their own without approval from HQ? If so, then you've obviously never worked for a federal agency. I can tell you for a fact that it would be an instant career suicide to do such a thing.

With the DoJ refusing to provide documents to Congress, refusing to make witnesses available, refusing to suspend or at least not promote those directly involved in the case, how could anyone come to the conclusion that this wasn't a politically motivated op? There is absolutely a smoking gun out there somewhere with very high level fingerprints on it. The only real question is, will it ever be found? :(

And you don't think that article was routed through the editor's desk before publication? :rolleyes2

I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of citing a source on the one hand while belittling the same source on the other hand.

When you condemn a news source and then turn around and use that same source to bolster your argument it leaves the impression that you're just selectively picking and choosing whatever supports your point of view and ridiculing whatever you don't want to believe.

That article is from 6 months ago...and the ATF all ready tried to implement the "gun control" that is discussed in the article, the mandatory reporting of multiple firearms sales to the same buyer.

This is not something that supports a more sinister theme to F&F, which is what is suspected.

Firearm rights have enough challenges these days without misrepresenting things to make things look worse than they are. Let's not forget that we're living in a renaissance of firearms freedom TODAY, better than it has been at any point since GCA 1968.

Actually, mandatory reporting has been implemented in border states, due to the ATF's crying for more regulation in the wake of this failed operation.
If you've watched any of the F&F hearings you've seen the relentless call for more laws/regulation by the dems.

You obviously weren't paying attention to the false claims that 90% of firearms seized in Mexico were coming from US sources.
Maybe you missed the the statement that the president made to the Brady bunch, r.e. "under the radar".

Only a complete idiot buys the assertion that this was a failed sting operation. There were no efforts to track weapons south of the border until they showed up at crime scenes. No efforts were made to intercept the weapons.
The sole logical reason for allowing these guns into Mexico was to manufacture a crisis, and to manufacture data to support more laws and regulation.

I think that was GR8's point. How much longer will a flaming liberal, agenda-driven CBS news staff and her socialist media buddies on other leftist propaganda networks allow her to smear Obama by pointing out the facts of F&F.

Now you see? This is what is wrong with people today. It's not hypocrisy, it's called recognition.

Maybe he called them out on many things that they got wrong or twisted to suit an agenda. So now we have to ignore them when they are right? How's that going to ever show them the path back to the highroad? I'm sure you know that CBS is the network that originally broke this cluster to the public. Kudos to this single reporter, they have big cajones to buck the "system" in this political climate.

Like I stated, incredibly short sighted and no memory of recent events whatsoever. As someone who's followed this entire fiacso very closely since the story broke, the anecdotal and circumstantial evidence that this was a politically motivated, or at the very least a politically expedient operation is overwhelming. Based on everything that's been revealed to paint a complete picture (or incomplete as it stands to date), there's definitely a smoking gun somewhere. Holder and the Obama administration are doing EXACTLY what Nixon did during the Watergate scandal, trying desperately to keep the lid on it. The only real question is whether they'll be more successful than Tricky Dick or not. :(

I should further point out that much of the wrangling between Congress and Holder isn’t about what happened, but who knew what and when. The DoJ has pretty much admitted that they violated the sovereignty of a neighboring nation, that they were complicit in smuggling arms across the border in the furtherance of criminal enterprise (and what should be classified as terrorism), and that they had no mechanisms in place to capture or arrest anyone. All we’re hashing out now is who knew about it when it was happening and what the DoJ has done (or hasn’t done) in holding anyone accountable.

We’ve had one single person resign over this, one person fired (who was a whistleblower, not a conspirator) and no one suspended. Remember that the DoJ NEVER admitted wrongdoing until they were outed by the fired whistleblower. That pretty much says all we need to know about what Holder’s intentions are now that they’ve been caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Apparently quite a while.

The article in the OP is dated December of 2011 and here is Sharyl's article from last Friday
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_1...affer-cant-be-questioned-on-fast-and-furious/

Oooh, here is a good story she wrote back in April
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_1...ast-and-furious-records-requests-blank-pages/

And here is one from March
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_1...d-documents-show/?tag=contentMain;contentBody

As a matter of fact, she's written a whole bunch of them over the last year or so.
