Unless the enemy was using night vision they couldn't see they were being painted, painting the motar team still may interfere with the operators ability to lay down fire and defend himself adequately. Why take that risk unless there was a reasonable expecectation that air assets were in the area? I wouldn't risk exposing myself out of hope.

Did someone in the chain of command promise help thereby giving the SEALS an expectation of help and then get over ruled?

Thanks, guys. That was a lot of interesting information. As for us knowing the truth, how long have we been waiting for "the truth" about the J.F.K. assassination, so I'm not holding my breath. And who knows, maybe we have it.
I just hate when it seems like we allow good men (and women) to die bad deaths for no gain. I guess the question would be, "Do you risk more to save them?"

Remember the scene in the movie "Clear and Present Danger" where they just pull the comm plug on the team down in the jungle? The whole thing is sickening.
