I'm becoming a bigger fan of the genre lately. 'Modern Western' qualifies as a non spaghetti-western, or white guys painted up as indian sidekicks, or John Wayne taking the leading role. Not that there's anything wrong with those films, but they just aren't what I'm thinking of. I'm sure you understand.

Here's a short list. If you don't mind, expand on it. I'm having a hard time finding ones I haven't seen:

Dances with Wolves
Tombstone
3:10 to Yuma (new version)
The Missing
True Grit (new version)
Open Range
Unforgiven
Little House on the Prairie (just kidding)

Started making my list and realized it was pretty much done. Everything you have mentioned, plus maybe quick and the dead.

There have been a lot great movies listed. But Unforgiven is in a class by itself.
k you

I have to thank you because you may realize that in the old west there may have not been any real heroes, if you will. No John Wayne, etc. Clint Eastwood had many movies or scripts for years that he did not produce at certain times because of how he felt about certain things, not that is just my uneducated opinion at this time, but Unforgiven is a classic, no heroes just people as they were in the day. But what do I know. Good night and good luck.

Little Bill Daggett: I don't deserve this... to die like this. I was building a house.
Will Munny: Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.
[aims gun]
Little Bill Daggett: I'll see you in hell, William Munny.
Will Munny: Yeah.
