How about tv movie "The Day After" about the events leading up to and after an nuclear exchange between the US and USSR, I know it had a big impact on me as kid....too real at the time. Some of the information I have seen says around a 100 million people watched it when it was broadcast.

And for some real cheese...."Damnation Alley" with George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent. Loved it as a kid for some reason.

The "Jericho" television series was pretty good until they had to wrap it up pretty quickly after its cancellation.
