What just hit me though was I born in the spring of 1987.

Geez, you were about a year old when I first hit the 'Net via a lab full of Macs on an AppleTalk (not even EtherTalk) network connected to an up-town 4800 baud modem...

And vim is for n00bs. Real 'Net curmudgeons use vi. I used to know the IP address of Simtel20 (simtel20.wsmr.army.mil) by heart; there was always something heart-warming about downloading free software from a computer at White Sands. Maybe it was the radioactive bits...

I use vim and cscope exclusively, but occasionally dust off emacs to find mismatched curly braces for me.

Vim can do that

I <3 that my environment doesn't change from local to dev VM to dev server to staging server to production server... And I'm not running a half gig of Java just to edit a file...

Best I've been able to do in vim is highlight mismatched braces, which doesn't do me much good having to scroll through a file with tens of thousands of lines.

Emacs can take me to the line of the first mismatched brace with a single command, however something as simple as setting tabstops is a pain in the ass, lol. I usually keep emacs around for single purpose things like this, lol.

Anyway, back on topic, did y'all ever see when valve setup that bbs as a ARG for Portal? I gotta say that was one of the coolest marketing ploys ever...

Trade Wars, Legend of the Red Dragon, Usurper, VGA Planets, major MUD.
VGA planets was funny because it was so graphically weak, but if you didn't have a VGA video card you couldn't play it. I played games that looked better than that on a lowly EGA card. Stupid VGA.

I still IRC daily. I was actually reminiscing about my pre-nerd days when I was new to the internet. One day, when I no longer had an AOL account, I started looking for a new way to chat. Ended up finding Microsoft Comic Chat. A buddy on DALnet #cars got annoyed with all the extra coding that came across the chat from the client, and turned me on to mIRC.

Emacs would be a great operating system if only it had a decent text editor.
