I was going to watch this last night but missed it. Just thought that I would post it to see what others thought of Channel 9s "investigative reporting" methods. Seems that the term "straw purchase" might be very well used somewhere in the discussion.

saw a story last night about gun shows and illegal purchases
showed a pic of a camoed out AR and called it "full auto"
it had the usual BS statistics about 2% of guns bought at shows were by felons/criminals

I was listening to the radio today and Mayor Mick Cornett was interviewed at the Conference of Mayors. He said that while he supported background checks, he also supported the 2nd Amendment/law abiding citizens. He said that he thought that the mayors were not going in the right direction and should concentrate their efforts at background checks more on the mentally ill and criminals(IIRC).

So they send an old white guy to buy guns from private parties and are shocked to see how easily he was able to purchase them. Then make the leap in logic that all the gang bangers are being armed at gun shows. If they want to be honest, they would send a 20 something all gang bangered up to try and purchase firearms. I would imagine the result of the "investigation" would be much different. Guess then the story would be about the evil, racist, profiling gun owners.

I saw part of it, and I think it was a tempest in a teapot, much ado about nothing. I'd almost go so far as to pull out Shakespeare's "it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing," from Macbeth but it wasn't told by an idiot, neither did it have any fury, though it did signify nothing. It certainly wasn't a sterling example of journalism--they might as well have spent the time paying Keyboard Cat videos...

My one-syllable review: Meh. And that's being generous.

I think the number (at least from the print story I saw yesterday) is the one where only 2% of incarcerated criminals get their guns from gun shows. And that is a poll of criminals in prison and hasn't changed much over the years. Which means 98% DON'T get their guns from gun shows. Illegal dealers, theft, and family members account for about 80-90% of where criminals get their guns. So that number is right, but I didn't see the news cast so I can't say how they presented it.

And the first question I asked when I saw the story online yesterday was if members of the media are exempt from straw purchase laws.

The progressive/socialist leftist libs never leave home without their "Get Out Of Jail Free Card" And/Or "Hypocrisy/Double Standard Card" that they can use at any time, any place and under any circumstances/conditions. This card is honored at any leftwing MSM broadcaster or at the DNC 24/. Members of the progressive/socialist lib left, such as David Gregory's high cap mag on DC TV, Bloomberg's straw purchases, Mark Kelly(Gabby Gifford's hubby), etc., etc. always carry their "Get Out Of Jail Free Card" And/Or "Hypocrisy/Double Standard Card" whenever they go on one of their lib agenda rants. KWTV seems to have possibly joined their ranks.

Here, but occasionally There.
I almost called their station the other day. One of the morning new anchors, the lady in particular, HAD to refer to the "automatic" weapons instead of "assault" weapons. In one sense she was right as a true assault weapon would likely be automatic, but her comments were more in line with a story on the AWB and those would be semi-automatic.

I hate to say it, but at the last two gun shows I went to, there were at least TWO separate guys at two separate tables that used the "private sale, no paperwork" as their selling point or sales pitch. I'm about a white as they come, so is my wife. She approached each table ( I was usually a table behind her ), and the firs thing out of their mouths went something like "good deal on a nice gun, practically new. no paperwork to buy" - seriously. 4 tables in total - all handguns.

I hate to say it, but the gunshow loophole not only exists, but is being exploited as a sales point. I don't imagine any of these guys would turn down a sale to anyone, regardless of what they looked like, what they were wearing, how they spoke. They were in it for the money.

My wife told me that the guy she bought my fathers day present from (A 1943 mosin) told her "Looks brand new. probably never been fired" - and no, he wasn't kidding. just wanted to make a sale. He had the rifle tagged at $245 bucks. She paid $150 because that's the max I would pay for a run of the mill mosin.) - same guy tried to use the 'no paperwork' as a selling point. When she told him that I had a C&R so paperwork wouldn't be a problem any way, he actually acted like he was offended.

Indiscriminate sellers are going to cause this loophole to get closed, causing heartache for the rest of us. There was no question as to what was inferred by the 'no paperwork' sales pitch and wink.
